Youth Leader Training

Developing leadership in youth is primary goal of the Scouting program. Youth improve their leadership skills through practice and training.

There are numerous training programs available for Scouts and Venturers ranging from unit level training to training programs conducted nationally at high adventure bases.

The starting point for developing youth leaders are the courses Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) and Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC).  These are delivered by senior youth and adult leaders in a troop or crew using a syllabus provided on scouting.org.

The next step for youth leaders is to participate in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) which is offered at the council level.  Courses are listed on the Training Calendar and Council Calendar.  Scouts must be age 14 or older, have completed ILST or ILSC and, in some cases, meet rank requirements.

Youth may also attend National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) which is delivered at one of the High Adventure Bases.  Youth will participate along with scouts from across the country.

Additional training opportunities for youth are available through the Order of the Arrow.
