National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) 2019

About the Course

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is the premier youth leadership program offered by Hawk Mountain Council. NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and crews, and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.

Course Specifics

Hawk Mountain Council's NYLT course will be held August 4-9, 2019 at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. The fee for the course is $295.00 which includes all lodging, meals, and course materials.

Requirements

  • All participants must be 14 years old or 13 years old and have completed 8th grade; there cannot be any exceptions.
  • Scouts must be First Class rank. (see below for female exception)
  • Scouts must have attended Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST); Venturers must have attended Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC).
  • All Scouts and Venturers need to have their Unit Leader’s recommendation.

For 2019 only, an exception will be granted for girls registered in Scouts BSA to attend NYLT without first achieving the First Class rank; they must still meet age requirements and first attend Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST). This will allow new troops to have trained youth leaders. Girls who are registered Venturers do not need to achieve the First Class rank, but must attend Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) prior to participating in NYLT.
