Don’t forget about our 100% Trained Leadership Policy!!

  • All leaders must be both Youth Protection Trained (with the new training) and position trained in order to register for their position at charter.  All new leaders must meet training requirements as well so encourage them to get to training.  Detailed training reports and handouts have been included in your recharter packets.  Look at them now for current information.

    Upcoming Training:  Join us at these upcoming events and encourage all of your leaders to get trained.

  • Youth Protection Training
    • Jan 12, 19 and 26 - Available at all Klondike Derbies at 10 am in Stem Building
    • Jan 25 - Available at Kutztown Location TBD.  Watch the council calendar
  • University of Scouting at Albright College - Feb 23
    • Position Training for all Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leaders, Youth Protection, District Committee, Merit Badge Counselor, Scoutbook and much more.
    • A full day of great events. 
    • Register online on the council calendar.
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills and Boy Scout Leader Specific - May 30 & 31
  • Hazardous Weather Training:
    • As of May, all direct contact leaders must have Hazardous Weather Training, and this must be updated every 2 years. 
    • Direct Contact leaders are Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Assistant Den Leaders, Venture Crew Advisors and Assistant Venture Crew Advisors.

  • Wood badge for adults and NYLT Training for youth: prepare the leadership of your unit to excel in scouting.
    • Wood Badge 2019 is coming soon.  Put September 20-22 and Oct 4-6 on your calendars now.   
    • We are still accepting staff applications for Wood badge. 
    • NYLT will take place for one week in August.

Upcoming Activities:

  • Klondike Derby: Saturday, January 19th, 2019 at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation.
    • Please pick up a leader's guide to share with your scouts. 
    • We will be giving hats again for this Klondike!  Extra hats are available for $8 each.
    • On-time registration is $10 with at least 1 scout, but 4 scouts are needed for a Patrol. 
    • Late registration is $15 per scout on the day of the event without any prior registration. 
    • Online registration is preferred on the hmc-bsa.orgExternal Link calendar and will be open until midnight Friday, the night before the event. 
    • Check-in starts at 7:45am at the Welcome Center by the parking lot. 
    • Remember to bring those Webelos for extra points!

  • Klondike Station Leads: Troops and Crews interested in running a station at Klondike to help earn points for their patrols need to attend a Klondike station review meeting.  Contact Dan Trout to schedule a time to review your station at the 5th and final review session:
    • Tuesday, Jan. 15th, at Cristina's restaurant in Blandon, PA starting at 6:30pm and ending no later than 8pm.
    • If you are interested in helping to lend a hand at Klondike please take a look at the Klondike Support signup sheet.
  • District Pinewood Derby – March 23
    •  The District Pinewood Derby will be at the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles on Saturday, March 23rd, from 8am to 11am.
    • The on-time registration fee for race participants will be $8. 
    • Uniformed adults may enter for free
      Non-uniformed adults may enter for $5
      Seniors & AAA members may enter for $4
      Non-participant siblings under 15 are free
  • 2018 Frontier District Patch Set:
    • The 2018 Frontier District patch set is now completed.  Extra patches are available for anyone who would like the complete the set.  Individual patches are $5 and a set of the 6 patches is $25. The HMSR Weekend patch will be the patch to complete the set for the scouts who attended all the district events.

    2018 Eagle Board of Reviews: Frontier District finished 2018 having completed 65 Eagle Board of Reviews.

  • Thank you to everyone for a rocking year, Frontier did a great job increasing sales this year, please see Jody’s announcements for sales details.
  • Thank you for a wonderful popcorn year - looking forward to an even bigger year next year!

Product Sale (Jody Peiffer Silva, Product Sale Logistics Coordinator –hmcpopcorn@gmail.com or 484-269-3492)

  • February 9th Movie Experience for $1000 sellers: February 9th in the morning.
    • Scouts who sold at least $1000 this year should have received a special invitation from Ann Brugger for the event but if you have Scouts that sold $1000 or more be sure to tell them to save the date to see “The Lego Movie 2, The Second Part”.
    • This is a Class A event; each scout will receive a popcorn and a drink for the movie.
    • RSVPs for this event are due to Ann Brugger by January 31st.
    • We had 51 scouts that sold $1000 or more; 14 of those are from Frontier, 28 from Cacoosing and 9 from Black Rock.
  • Post-Sale Inventory Clearance (Premium Caramel):
    • We had 14 cases of Premium Caramel Corn with nuts leftover that we need to sell.
    • Units will earn 50% of anything they sell. They simply will sign out the inventory from Council then return anything they did not sell within 2 business days of the agreed upon sale date along with the payment for anything they sold.
    • This commission will NOT go towards the units 2018 sales totals nor will they go towards a scout’s individual sales or prizes earned which is why we are offering a higher commission percentage. It is simply a way to help the unit earn some extra commissions and to hopefully sell the leftover product.

  • Balances Past: All payments for Frontier have been received and paid in full, great job everyone!
  • Increase in Sales Commission: Bonus commission for the annual increase were mailed the week of Christmas. Units should have received these, any concerns with the bonus commission please contact Jody or Ann.
  • 2018 Sales:
    • Council had an overall increase in sales this year of $64,945 which is a 24% increase from last year; $40,695 came from Frontier’s increase in sales which is a 38% increase from last year.
  • 2018 Top Selling Scouts:
    • The 2018 Top Selling Cub Scout for Frontier District is: Natalie Sharp from Pack 511 who sold $2218.17.
    • The 2018 Top Selling Boy Scout for Frontier District is: Logan Westlake from Troop 575 who sold $4322.49.
      • Logan was also the Top Selling Scout overall for all of Hawk Mountain Council.
  • 2018 Survey – A survey was e-mailed out to Unit Kernels on January 3rd. If your unit has not done so already, please take a moment to complete the survey to let us know how you felt the sale went this year. We would love feedback on the products offered, the addition of the nuts this year, and any suggestions you may have to help us continue to improve for next year. We will be meeting soon to discuss ideas for the 2019 sale, so your feedback is much appreciated. If you did not receive it or if anyone here would like to complete the survey, please let Jody know and she can forward you the link for the survey.

  • Camp Kickoff – The camp kickoff will be held on January 16 at Cabela’s in Hamburg. Sessions will be held for Cub Camping and Scout Camping at both 6PM and 7PM. Please register at the council website.
  • Rechartering – Recharter packets are available and online rechartering is now live! Please get started ASAP – DO NOT WAIT.
    • PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR CHARTER BY MARCH 1! Your charter will expire on March 31. This gives us at least 30 days to resolve any issues that may have been missed as well as gives the office staff a window of time to enter your charter so there are no hiccups or missed coverage. First submitted (without errors), first entered!
    • Please note that due to price hikes by our insurance company, the insurance rate is now $7 – the national registration fee has not changed.
    • When you are ready to submit, please call or email me to arrange a drop-off time – don’t just drop it off!
    • I will be holding “Office Hours” like last year to receive packets and offer help

  • Satellite Day Camp – We will be helping to hold a day camp at Daniel Boone Homestead again. The camp will be June 17-21. A Wolf-Bear Day Camp will be held from 8:30AM-4PM. A Twilight Camp will also be held from 6:30-8:30PM for Tigers and their adult partners. We need volunteers to help run both events.
  • Volunteers Needed: Spreading the ideals and values of Scouting isn’t a one-person job or a three-person job. We need you! I can’t be everywhere and neither can Doug or Dave. We need other volunteers to help share the load. All of our committees and teams need additional members, no single one is more important than the rest!
    • Activities – Help plan and organize successful events for the District
    • Advancement – Help track as young people gain ranks and earn awards, as well as participate in Eagle Scout Boards
    • Commissioners – Be a Scouting Doctor! Visit unit(s) to be a helpful face and voice to bring new perspectives and helping hands. The reports you log help district volunteers make sure that every unit is healthy and will be long-lasting. You’re the link between a unit and the district/council.
    • Finance – All sorts of positions available! Help is always needed with fundraising efforts. We can’t offer Scouting without financial support. You don’t need to be a math whiz or finance guru to help here.
    • Membership – Help change the lives of others by helping to enroll young people in our program. You don’t need to be a public speaker, we need organizers most of all.
    • Nominating – Are you, or someone you know, that person who knows *everyone*? Then we need you on the Nominating Committee! The Nominating Committee helps us find new volunteers and recommends the annual slate of District officers each year. Members don’t need to be registered Scouting volunteers.
    • Training – Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader! Help organize and run training sessions for other volunteers at district/council events or at unit meetings.

Frontier District Awards

Each calendar year the Frontier district recognizes volunteers that go above and beyond to provide leadership, dedication, and invaluable service to the youth in their units, the district, and the council.

Frontiersman Award

The Frontiersman Award is presented yearly to recognize worthy adults. Any adult registered and serving at the unit level is eligible to receive the award. Every Frontier District (Pack, Troop, or Crew) is entitled to select ONE adult per year to receive the award. The unit committee should screen, select, and forward the response form to the Frontier District, Hawk Mountain Council, BSA. You can download a nomination form.

District Award of Merit

Available to registered Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level. You can download a nomination form.

Silver Beaver

Recipients of this award are registered adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. The Silver Beaver is an award given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service. It is given to those who do not actively seek it.
